New Testament Prophecy is to bring edification to His Bride.
The purpose of New Testament prophecy is to edify and to bring comfort to believers, drawing them to Jesus. Prophecy should confirm what He has already spoken to one’s heart. (1 Corinthians 14:3) Prophecy is to build up the body of Christ and to equip the Church into fullness/unity. (Ephesians 4:11-13)
When we prophesy we are to be a people who speak edification, exhortation and comfort to His Bride. I believe that prophecy is an antidote to the works and lies of the evil one who is forever accusing the body of Christ to quit, by bringing hopeless, and division.
1 Corinthians 14:1 3.But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men.
- Edification: means to instruct, strengthen, uplift, building up people that brings hope to us. It strengthens us to stand up and continue the fight of faith.
- Exhortation: To remove sluggishness; calling us near and urging us to continue to preserve – prophecy encourages us to come near to Jesus to the purpose he has for us.
- Comfort: Speaks of giving God’s perspective in a time of difficulty or uncertainty. A prophetic word of comfort brings an awareness of God’s personal love and care for us.
I love how we are given a template to prophecy from; 1 Corinthians 14:3 is there to instruct us as we prophesy to His Bride. Remember when we prophesy the goal is to awaken our hearts to Gods love for us leading us to a deeper friendship with Him.
Let’s be a people who prophesy the answer not the problem; that way the person will receive grace to walk it out. Most people are aware of what they are struggling with but they struggle in awareness of the greatness God has placed in their lives. We get to remind them; this is awesome. Therefore never under estimate the redemptive power of prophetic ministry – there are many people starving to know who they are; we have the ability to alter the history of people’s lives, we know the ONE who has the answer.
